GEO for Vienna Businesses: How to Get Recommended in ChatGPT, Gemini & Co.

In short

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means structuring your website and company data so that AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overview can understand and name your business. GEO does not replace SEO, it builds on it. One research paper found that sources, quotations and figures raised visibility in AI answers by up to roughly 40 % in a test set-up. Nobody can guarantee a mention.

What is GEO and how does it differ from SEO?

Classic SEO aims to place your page as high as possible in a results list. GEO aims to get your business into the answer itself when someone asks an AI: “Which advertising agency in Vienna is recommendable for social media and Google Ads?” The AI reads several sources, summarises them and names individual providers. If you are missing there, you are not found, even if you are on page one of Google.

GEO builds on SEO. In its documentation on AI features in Search, Google writes that the same fundamentals apply as for classic search optimisation and that no extra special markup is needed. If you already have a fast, well-structured page with helpful content, you are a good way there.

What does research say about GEO?

The paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (Aggarwal et al., arXiv 2311.09735) examined in a test set-up with many queries which changes make content more visible in AI answers. According to the authors, source citations, quotations and statistics raised visibility by up to roughly 40 %. Simply repeating search terms brought hardly anything. This is a lab result, not a promise for your website, but it fits what readers want anyway: substantiated, specific statements instead of marketing phrases.

Why does GEO matter for small businesses in Vienna?

AI answers appear directly in Google Search, and many people use chat assistants for recommendations. For local questions (“restaurant for groups in the first district”, “web designer Vienna”) AI systems summarise a few providers. For small businesses this is an opportunity: if you prepare your information properly, you can be named alongside larger competitors. Our view: that only works with specific details. “We offer quality” is never quoted, “social media support from 790 € per month, one video and one graphic per week” can be.

Which 7 measures have the most impact?

  1. Answer first: answer the core question of a page in the first two sentences. “What does X cost?” does not belong at the end.
  2. Questions as headings: “How does Google Ads work for tradespeople?” is clearer to people and machines than “Our philosophy”.
  3. Consistent business data: name, address, phone, services and opening hours must be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, social media and directories. More in Local SEO Vienna.
  4. Structured data: with Schema.org (Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Article) you describe your business in a machine-readable way.
  5. Verifiable statements: cite sources, give figures with year and origin, show real projects. Vague claims are rarely quoted.
  6. External mentions: directories, customer reviews, press and partnerships show that others talk about you.
  7. Technically accessible: fast loading, content as HTML (not only via JavaScript), no blocked crawlers. Check your robots.txt.

How do we apply this on our own website?

On digtatur.com every service page starts with a short answer, headings are phrased as questions, and every page has an FAQ section. In addition there is Schema.org data (Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article), a sitemap with language versions for German, English and Turkish, a robots.txt that explicitly allows AI crawlers, and an llms.txt summarising company, services and prices. Prices are shown openly because only what is documented and findable can be named.

Do I need an llms.txt?

An llms.txt is a simple text file that summarises your business and your most important pages for AI systems. It takes little effort and we create it for new websites. It is no miracle cure: Google stresses that the same fundamentals apply to its AI features as to classic SEO. Invest in content and structure first.

How do I measure whether GEO works?

AI answers vary from query to query, so only a fixed procedure helps. This is how we work:

  1. Collect ten to twenty real customer questions, for example “Which advertising agency in Vienna offers social media and Google Ads?”.
  2. Ask the same questions once a month in several AI assistants, ideally without logging in or in a neutral browser profile.
  3. Note for each answer: is your business named, at which position, with which details, and which sources are shown?
  4. Record the baseline before changes and compare monthly afterwards.
  5. In addition, check in your analytics how many visitors come from AI answers.

Important: single answers are snapshots. A statement about impact only makes sense after several measurements. We will publish our own test results here as soon as reliable measurement series are available.

Where do I start?

Write down your ten most frequent customer questions and answer each on its own page or in an FAQ, briefly, specifically and with your data. Then align your business data everywhere.
