Local SEO Vienna: How to Get Onto the Map with Your Google Business Profile

27.09.2026 · 6 min read · Updated on 08.10.2026 · by Sadettin Aksu

In short

For searches such as "photographer Vienna", Google shows the map and business profiles first. You appear there when your profile is complete and up to date, you receive reviews regularly, your company details are identical everywhere and your website explains each main service on its own page. Nobody can guarantee a position, but these steps decide whether you are in the game at all.

Why does local SEO matter for Viennese businesses?

Because many searches have a local aim and end directly in a visit or a call. A Google representative stated at an event in 2018 that around 46% of all Google searches have local intent, as reported by Search Engine Roundtable. It is a second-hand statement and not specific to Austria, but it shows the direction. According to Google data cited by Backlinko, 76% of people who search for "near me" visit a business within a day. This figure also comes from abroad and is no longer brand new.

For hairdressers, restaurants, tradespeople or practices this means: if you are not on the map for "service + Vienna", you lose enquiries to competitors before anyone has seen your website.

By what criteria does Google rank local results?

Google names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance depends on where the person searching is. Prominence comes from reviews, mentions online and the strength of your website. You cannot influence distance, but you can influence relevance and prominence.

How do I optimise my Google Business Profile?

Fill in every field completely and truthfully, and keep it up to date. These are the key points:

  1. Primary category: Choose the category that describes your service most precisely and add suitable secondary categories.
  2. Details: Address, phone, website, opening hours including public holidays, services and products.
  3. Description: Clear and without keyword stuffing. What do you offer, to whom, and in which area?
  4. Photos and videos: Real, current images of team, premises and work. Good photos increase clicks and trust.
  5. Posts: Post offers, news and promotions regularly.
  6. Questions and answers: Ask and answer common customer questions yourself.

Our tip: check your profile regularly, even if you have not changed anything. On our own profile, Google set the category to "not defined" without our involvement and asked us to confirm holiday opening hours. Such automatic changes only show up if you look.

How do I get more reviews?

Ask satisfied customers for a review straight after the job and send them the direct link to your profile. Reply to every review, including critical ones, politely and factually. Never buy or invent reviews: that violates Google's guidelines and can lead to your profile being suspended. Our opinion: ten genuine reviews with a personal reply work better than a row of anonymous five-star entries with no text.

What role does my website play in local search?

Google compares your profile with your website, so both must match. These help:

  • A dedicated service page for each main service with a local reference and real content, for example Web design Vienna
  • Name, address and phone in the footer of every page, identical to your profile
  • Schema.org markup (LocalBusiness or Organization) so machines can read your company details unambiguously
  • Fast loading and good use on a smartphone, because many local searches happen on the go

If you are rebuilding your site, you will find a checklist in the article Website relaunch 2026.

How important is consistent company data (NAP)?

Very important. Name, address and phone number should be written exactly the same everywhere: on your website, in your Google profile, on Facebook and Instagram, in business directories and in your Chamber of Commerce entry. Differences such as "Str." instead of "Straße" or an old number confuse search engines and AI systems. Check all entries once a year and correct any differences.

How are local SEO and AI answers connected?

AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity draw on the same public sources: your website, your Google profile, directories. Clear, matching data therefore helps both. The research paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" (Aggarwal et al., arXiv 2311.09735) found that content with source citations, statistics and quotations can increase its visibility in AI answers by up to around 40%. For you this means: put concrete details on your service pages instead of clichés. More in our article GEO for Viennese businesses.

Are separate pages for individual Vienna districts worthwhile?

Only if each page has genuine value of its own, such as local features, directions or local references. Near-identical pages with only the district name swapped do more harm than good. Our opinion: one good service page with clear details achieves more than twenty district pages with copied text.

What does local SEO cost?

The Google Business Profile itself is free. Costs arise for management, photos, service pages or additional advertising. You can see which packages we offer on our pricing page. For a rough overview of pricing models, see our article What does an advertising agency in Vienna cost?

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for local SEO to work?

Profile changes often take effect within a few weeks, while rankings for website pages usually need several months. There is no firm promise.

Do I need a Google Business Profile if I have no shop?

Yes, if you visit customers on site or have an office with an address. Service providers without walk-in customers can state their service area and hide the address.

Does the Google Business Profile cost anything?

No, the profile is free. Costs only arise for management or additionally booked ads.

May I give customers something in return for a review?

No. Paid or rewarded reviews violate Google's guidelines. Ask politely and make it easy with a direct link.

How do I find out how visible my business is today?
