What Does a Website Cost in Austria? Prices, Running Costs and Legal Duties 2026

22.10.2026 · 5 min read · by Sadettin Aksu

In short

A simple business website with a few pages usually starts at around €1,000 net with an agency; a business website with custom copy and photos is more like €2,500 to €5,000, and an online shop costs more. On top come running costs for domain, hosting, maintenance and licences. In Austria, an imprint (§ 5 E-Commerce Act), disclosure under the Media Act and a privacy policy are mandatory.

What determines the price of a website?

“What does a website cost?” is a bit like “What does a car cost?”. The price mainly depends on:

  • Scope: How many pages do you need (home, services, about, contact, blog)?
  • Design: A template with adjustments or a custom design that matches your brand?
  • Content: Do you supply copy and photos, or should copy be written and photos and videos produced?
  • Features: contact form, booking, multiple languages, shop, integrations
  • Google foundations: clean technology, loading speed, structured data and pages that answer search queries
  • Support: Who handles updates, security and changes after launch?

What options are there and what do they cost?

The agency prices in the table are our own starting prices (all net plus 20% VAT). Other providers calculate differently; always compare quotes by scope, not just by the final price. All packages are on our pricing page and under Web Design Vienna.

Which running costs come on top?

  • Domain (e.g. your-company.at): per year, price depends on the provider
  • Hosting: storage and server, monthly or yearly
  • Maintenance: updates, security, backups. Important with WordPress so the site stays secure
  • Licences: for premium plugins, fonts or image libraries
  • Shop fees: Shopify charges a monthly fee, plus payment provider fees
  • Changes and content: new pages, photos, blog posts

Agree in advance who owns the domain, hosting and website. With us, that is always you, not the agency, so you can switch at any time.

Which legal duties apply to websites in Austria?

These points belong in every quote, because they take time and are required by law:

  • Imprint under § 5 E-Commerce Act (ECG): including name or company, address, contact details and, where applicable, company register number, VAT number, chamber and supervisory authority. The Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO) offers members a free imprint service.
  • Disclosure under § 25 Media Act: websites are subject to a disclosure obligation, which can be shown together with the imprint.
  • Privacy policy (GDPR) and, if you use analytics or advertising tools, a cookie banner with genuine consent.
  • Accessibility: Since 28 June 2025 the Accessibility Act (BaFG) applies, among others to online shops. Micro-enterprises (fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million turnover or balance sheet total) that provide services are exempt. An easy-to-use site still pays off, for customers and for Google.

This is guidance, not legal advice. If in doubt, check your obligations with the WKO or a lawyer.

Is there funding for a website?

For digitalisation projects of small and medium-sized businesses there is the KMU.DIGITAL programme. First, a consultation by certified experts is funded; after that, implementation funding can be applied for. According to Digital Austria, funding for implementation through capitalisable new investments is up to €6,000; the current funding period runs from 2024 to 2026. Conditions and remaining budget change, so check the current status on kmudigital.at before you place an order.

How do I recognise a fair website quote?

  1. Number of pages, features and languages are listed specifically
  2. It states who supplies copy, photos and videos
  3. Imprint, privacy policy and cookie banner are included
  4. Google foundations are described (loading speed, titles, structured data)
  5. Number of revision rounds and a launch date are stated
  6. Domain, hosting and logins belong to you
  7. Running costs after launch are shown openly

Frequently asked questions

What does a simple website for a small business cost?

At digtatur a simple business website starts at €990 net if copy and images are available. A business website with more pages and SEO foundations starts at €2,490, a website with copy, photos and video at €3,990. Running costs for domain and hosting come on top.

How long does it take to have a website built?

A simple website is often ready within a few weeks if content is supplied on time. Larger projects with a photo shoot, copywriting or a shop take longer. We state the exact date in the quote.

Can I deduct the website as a business expense?

A website for your business is usually business-related. How it is treated for tax purposes (expensed immediately or depreciated over several years) should be clarified with your tax adviser.

Isn't a website builder cheaper?

At first, yes. But you pay ongoing fees, invest your own time and are limited in design, loading speed and moving. For a first online presence that may be enough. If the website should generate enquiries, a professional build usually pays off.
